Twittermania and Celebrities

Up-close and personal. This is the experience which is offered by Twitter to any and everyone who until now had only dreamed of meeting or talking to his/her dream celebrity. The latest fad that seems to have stormed the celebrity’dom is Tweeting. People have always looked for an opportunity to know their favorite celebs beyond the usual glamorous or controversial portrayal in television, newspapers or magazines. What twitter has managed to offer them is the chance to know these celebrities as ordinary people. From Rahul Bose tweeting about a recent visit to Manali, to the Indian cricketer Zaheer Khan updating all his followers about his injury, to Amitabh Bachchan describing his sojourns in Rome, it is as personal as it can get. This is surely a dream come true for any fan, especially when a celebrity like Shah Rukh Khan or Sachin Tendulkar sends a personalized reply to someone.

But why do celebrities Tweet anyways? Is it because everyone is doing it, as we have reports of celebrities like Amitabh Bachchan inviting Amir Khan to be on twitter or is just a popularity gimmick to garner the people’s attention like the recent topless photographs posted by Mallika Sherawat on Twitter? Ashton Kutcher recently got dethroned by Lady Gaga as the celebrity with the most number of Twitter followers. So can it also be a race to gain the maximum followers, kind of an internal competition?

Celebs tweet about almost everything, from downright annoying to hugely informative. Where the likes of Directors and producers see Twitter as a medium of promotion for their new movies, the actors, politicians, sportspersons use it as a medium of reinstating their connect with their fans and attentive audience. Twitter allows the common man to directly converse with a well-known personality, either from a reel or real life. No wonder everyone is literally hooked on to Twitter 24/7. One doesn’t even need to carry around a laptop to access the website as cellphones today come equipped with applications that provide ridiculously easy access to Twitter. Celebrities are slowly realizing the importance of social marketing themselves online. Geeks would call it the SEO of celebrities in a race to reach the top of Tweetosphere!

But sometimes, celeb tweets can result into a reality check too. Celebrities might become gossip mongers or controversy creators, just to add fuel to the hype which has become a form of social media marketing for them. With pictures and videos sharing too becoming a reality on twitter, it could only take a turn for the good or for the worse. But there’s a twist in this tail too as the followers too could vent their vengeance at their most beloved or hated celebs with caustic tweets directed directly at these celebs, out in the open for the world to see or read. Now there’s no other option for the celebs but to block these followers or they invite the risk of a negative popularity campaign online.

With new and improved applications being added every day and tweeting becoming simpler and more personalized at the same time, Twitter will continue to redefine the way we know our celebrities and interact with them.
